Room Monitor

Privacy Policy

Room Monitor is designed to keep camera processing, recordings, and settings under your control on your Mac.

Overview

Room Monitor does not require an account and does not operate a developer-controlled cloud service. The app does not send your camera frames, microphone audio, event recordings, selected monitoring region, or application settings to the developer.

Room Monitor does not include advertising, behavioral tracking, third-party advertising SDKs, or developer-operated analytics or telemetry.

Camera access and video

Room Monitor requests access to a camera so it can provide the live preview, detect motion, maintain optional pre-motion buffers, and create event recordings. Camera frames are processed locally on your Mac. Camera data is not transmitted to the developer or to a Room Monitor cloud service.

You can revoke camera permission at any time in macOS System Settings. Room Monitor cannot monitor or record video without camera access.

Microphone access and audio

Microphone recording is optional. Room Monitor requests microphone access only when you enable Use microphone. When enabled, Room Monitor records the current default macOS microphone with event video and may temporarily buffer recent microphone audio in memory so an event can include audio from immediately before motion was confirmed.

Microphone audio can include voices and other sounds from people who are not visible in the camera image. Audio is processed locally and is not sent to the developer or to a Room Monitor cloud service. You can disable Use microphone in Room Monitor or revoke microphone permission in macOS System Settings.

Temporary buffers and local event staging

To support pre-motion capture and reliable unattended recording, Room Monitor temporarily keeps limited camera, video, and, when enabled, audio data in memory. Active events are written first to a private local staging area within Room Monitor's macOS application container. This isolates active recording from delays or interruptions involving the destination folder, external media, or cloud-synchronized folders.

After an event is successfully delivered to the selected destination, Room Monitor normally removes the corresponding local staged copy. If the app, Mac, destination, or transfer is interrupted, a staged event may remain locally so Room Monitor can retry delivery or recover the event later.

Recordings and the destination you choose

Completed event recordings are delivered to the dedicated Room Monitor folder within the destination you select. Event content may include still images, video, and, if you enable microphone recording, audio.

Room Monitor does not upload recordings to the developer. If the destination you select is managed by iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or another synchronization or storage provider, that provider may copy or upload the files according to its own settings, terms, and privacy policy. Room Monitor does not control or guarantee the operation of third-party synchronization services.

Settings and folder authorization

Room Monitor stores application preferences locally on your Mac. These may include camera and format choices, motion-detection settings, capture options, schedules, monitoring-region settings, storage preferences, and notification preferences.

Room Monitor also stores a macOS security-scoped bookmark so it can regain access to the destination folder you selected. The bookmark and application preferences are stored locally and are not transmitted by Room Monitor to the developer.

Retention and deletion of recordings

Recordings remain under your control in the selected destination. If automatic retention is enabled, Room Monitor may remove eligible Room Monitor-owned event folders after they become older than the retention period you configure. If cleanup is unusually overdue, a destination is selected again, or the configured period is shortened, Room Monitor may pause deletion pending your explicit review. During this pause, eligible recordings remain stored and may exceed the configured age until you approve cleanup. You can also delete recordings yourself using Finder.

The storage-warning setting is informational and does not cause Room Monitor to delete recordings before the configured retention period. The minimum-free-disk-space safeguard may stop new monitoring when available storage becomes too low; it is not intended to shorten the configured retention period.

Notifications

If you enable motion-event notifications, Room Monitor uses the macOS notification system. Notification content is generated locally by the app and is not sent by Room Monitor to the developer.

Analytics, crash reports, and App Store information

Room Monitor does not contain its own analytics, tracking, or telemetry system. Apple may provide the developer with privacy-preserving App Store sales, usage, and diagnostic information, including crash information from users who have chosen to share diagnostics and usage data with app developers. This information is provided by Apple independently of Room Monitor's local recording functions.

Room Monitor does not receive your camera frames, microphone audio, or event recordings through App Store analytics or crash reporting. App Store purchases and payment processing are handled by Apple; the developer does not receive your payment-card information from Room Monitor.

Room Monitor website

The Room Monitor website is a static site and does not use advertising, tracking pixels, analytics scripts, account sign-in, or website forms. The site does not set Room Monitor-operated tracking cookies.

The site is hosted using GitHub Pages. As the hosting provider, GitHub may process routine technical information associated with web requests, such as IP addresses and server logs, under GitHub's own privacy practices. That information is not collected through Room Monitor application code.

Support communications

If you contact Room Monitor support by email, the developer will receive the email address you use and the information you choose to include in your message or attachments. This information is used to respond to your request, diagnose reported problems, and maintain reasonable support records.

You are not required to send recordings to obtain support. Please do not send recordings, logs, or other files containing personal or sensitive information unless they are necessary to the support request and you intentionally choose to provide them.

Your privacy choices and control

Room Monitor does not maintain a developer-side account or database containing your recordings or application settings. Because those items remain on your Mac and in destinations you control, the developer generally cannot retrieve, view, correct, or delete them remotely.

You can control your information by disabling microphone recording, revoking camera or microphone access in macOS System Settings, changing the destination folder, changing retention settings, or deleting saved events in Finder. If you want support correspondence you previously sent to the developer deleted, you may request deletion using the contact address below, subject to any information that must be retained for legitimate legal or recordkeeping purposes.

Recording other people

Room Monitor is a general-purpose monitoring and event-recording tool. It does not determine whether recording is lawful in a particular room, workplace, home, jurisdiction, or situation. Laws governing video recording, audio recording, notice, and consent vary by location and circumstances.

You are responsible for using Room Monitor lawfully and for providing notice or obtaining consent from people who may be recorded when required. This is especially important when microphone recording is enabled because conversations and sounds may be captured even when the people speaking are outside the camera view.

Data security

Room Monitor reduces privacy exposure by processing monitoring data locally and by not operating a remote recording service. The security of saved recordings also depends on the security of your Mac, the destination you choose, and any third-party storage or synchronization service you use. You are responsible for protecting access to those systems and files.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated if Room Monitor's features or data-handling practices change. The current version will be posted on this page and the effective date will be revised. App Store privacy information will also be updated when required to reflect the behavior of the released app.
